Saturday’s North West 200 has been cancelled following a fatal accident involving Malachi Mitchell-Thomas.

The incident happened on the third lap of the Supertwins race, which occurred on the approach to Black Hill.

A statement from the organisers said: “Malachi Mitchell-Thomas has died as a result of a crash on the third lap of the Supertwins race at the Vauxhall International North West 200 today.

“The 20 year old from Chorley in Lancashire crashed his Burrows Engineering Kawasaki on the approach to Black Hill. The race was immediately red flagged and Malachi was treated by medical staff from the MCUI Medical team but succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

“No other riders were involved in the incident. Racing was subsequently abandoned.

North West 200 bosses have named the rider who passed away following the incident in today’s Supertwins race as 20-year-old Malachi Mitchell-Thomas.

Fighting for a rostrum finish, Mitchell-Thomas crashed on the approach to Black Hill on the third lap of today’s Supertwin race, which was then immediately red flagged before organisers cancelled all further action. He was attended to by the MCUI medical team but succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Despite his road racing career beginning just two years ago, Mitchell-Thomas had already established himself as an up and coming talent. He finished second in the Newcomers A race at last year’s Manx Grand Prix before going on to shatter both race and lap records on his way to a breathtaking victory in the Senior.

The Bolton rider got off to a strong start in 2016, with a hat-trick of wins at the Mid Antrim 150 and impressive podium at Tandragee.

He had enjoyed an impressive start to the 2016 North West 200, including a commendable fourth place in the second supersport race after a scrap for the podium with Peter Hickman.
